Blackfriars Theatre

A quintessential part of Boston’s history, Blackfriars Theatre is based in 'The Dominican Friary'. The Grade II listed building was built in 1222 Medieval England by the Dominicans, also known as the Black Friars.

After a fire at the Friary, the refectory became the only part that remained, and for many years the Friary was left untouched, until a local architect had the inspiration to convert the remains into a theatre building. To raise funds for the construction, The Blackfriars Trust was founded successfully, and in 1966 the Blackfriars Theatre and Arts Centre opened.

The Theatre is run by a team of passionate volunteers that support the Theatre in all their endeavours, from the box office to administration. Today, Blackfriars Theatre and Arts Centre is home to several popular local amateur dramatic and operatic groups. Throughout the year they hold a vast programme of stage productions that families and friends alike can enjoy. There is also a shop where you can help support the Theatre by purchasing merchandise which is all based on the Blackfriars Building, the Theatre itself and Boston.
